Challenge

The NGO focuses on fighting hunger and enabling food security in a country severely impacted by conflict, climate change, and increasing land degradation. Their local staff members are highly qualified in the topics of agriculture and engineering. However, faced with the consequences of climate change and conflict, staff members struggled with adapting to the new reality.

Approach

Maramia provided an online training program for staff members in Afghanistan that was building on existing knowledge of agriculture and watershed management, but guided the participants to understand the underlying principles. This included, among other topics, regeneration techniques for degraded land; design options for using locally available resources for water harvesting, seed saving, and soil restoration; and regenerative grazing management.

Outcome

Understanding the underlying principles of soil biology, water cycles, and resilience design enables local staff members to transfer their vast technical knowledge to a changed climate and adapt accordingly. The focus on using available, local resources aims to empower local implementation without dependence on external or expensive sources.
