Haitian School Climate Assessment & Food Forest Conceptual Design | 2019-2020

CLIENT TYPE

Kelly Crowdis with Christian Veterinary Mission (CVM) in Haiti in support of a local NGO and school

CHALLENGE

Kelly Crowdis requested a food forest design for a school near Martino, Haiti, that sought to meet three goals of profit, production, and demonstration of food forest techniques specific to the climate and cultural context. The region was impacted by numerous natural disasters, intense deforestation, and food insecurity, while local agricultural wisdom and food sovereignty led the design.

APPROACH

Maramia, as part of a team of agricultural experts and interns at ECHO Global, performed a regional and site ecological resilience assessment and met virtually with Kelly Crowdis to understand the cultural and capacity context of the team and site.

OUTCOME

The assessment informed a food forest design that managed water, wind, food processing, and market sales on-site. A phased implementation plan and planting plan were included, and a call with the client allowed for clarification of any remaining questions.

DELIVERABLE(S)

The client was provided with the design maps, a PowerPoint that outlined the analysis, design with explanation, and drafting plans of design assets; a phased implementation plan; and Excel files of the implementation and planting plans.
